Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can I become a member of Black Girls Sister Society?

Beginning in 2026, Black Girls Sister Society will transition to an invite-only membership system.

Existing members in good standing will be able to invite up to three individuals to apply during the annual open enrollment period, subject to the 50-member cap per chapter.

What is the membership cap per chapter?

Each chapter is limited to 50 members to ensure a close-knit and engaged community.

What are the membership dues for Black Girls Sister Society?

Membership dues are $250 annually. These dues support our programs, events, chapter operations, and member experiences.

How are the membership dues utilized?

  • 30% Chapter Reserve: Supports chapter-specific initiatives and essential expenses.

  • 10% Board Member Compensation: Provides fair compensation for board members.

  • 20% Organization Reserve Fund: Covers emergency needs and member hardship support.

    • Emergency Funds: Helps chapters address unexpected financial needs or special events if chapter reserves are depleted.

    • Member Hardship Support: Assists members facing temporary financial difficulties with paying their dues. Members can apply for support by submitting a hardship document at least 30 days before dues are due. This does not cover personal bills or expenses unrelated to membership.

  • 20% Organizational Costs: Includes operational expenses such as website hosting, email platforms, office space, HR costs, and branded merchandise.

  • 20% Welcome Kits & Merchandise: Funds a thoughtfully curated Welcome Kit and exclusive BGSS items designed to celebrate your entrance into the community.

What is the application process for potential members?

The application process takes approximately 30 days. Applicants will attend a meet-and-greet with chapter members and leadership to assess their alignment with our mission, vision, and values.

Why is community service important to Black Girls Sister Society?

Community service is central to our mission. It ensures that all members are committed to giving back and supporting one another.

What happens if my chapter is already at the 50-member cap?

If a chapter reaches its cap, additional applicants may be placed on a waiting list or directed to a different chapter, if available.

Note on Political Affiliation
Black Girls Sister Society does not affiliate with or endorse any political party. We remain neutral because political beliefs are personal, like religion. However, our mission is rooted in uplifting, empowering, and protecting Black women. We welcome members whose values align with that mission. If someone’s political stance conflicts with the safety, dignity, and empowerment of Black women, then BGSS is simply not the right space for them.
